Coronary angioplasty

This is a percutaneous procedure that does not require surgical incision.

It is performed under local anesthesia and consists of removing a coronary artery.

During the procedure that requires a short hospitalization a catheter or probe is inserted through the wrist vessels or the thigh and brought to the level of the heart. Then, a balloon is advanced to the coronary and inflated to lift the obstruction.

Most often the intervention is completed by the installation of a small metal tube called “stent” to keep the artery open.
